It’s all about the sheep

24th November 2019

Lake Hayes Agricultural and Pastoral Show bringing the Wakatipu community together every January since 1904.

When the Lake Hayes Show first began, the Wakatipu was the home to sheep and grain crops. Later dairy and deer were added and today we have vineyards and tourists. And yet we still have sheep. Maybe not so many now, the station numbers aren’t what they used to be but increasingly sheep feature in lifestyle blocks and wool is making a resurgence given its excellent eco qualities. So, we want to celebrate all things sheep.  Not forgetting the equestrian classes, this year we are a Horse of the Year Show qualifier, plus there’s the kids entertainment, country music, Home Industries classes, trade and market stalls. Something for everyone.

On display at the Show you will see hand shearing (by the world champion) spinning, knitting, felting, high end fashion, wool creations from WoolOn, sheep’s milk and cheese. Plus, the best selection of fleeces from our local farms and stations. This along with our usual meat and breed classes and the new locals class Ewe with lambs or lamb at foot. As always there’s the Best Pet Lamb in the pets section so let’s see if we can boost numbers this year.

Horse of the Year qualifier means there are a few minor changes to the equestrian classes so please check out the details on showday.online. We have a full Pleasure Riding section and four rings, so there’s going to be lots happening.  Including Fashion in the Field again after it’s very successful inaugural competition. Think we might even include some prizes for the equestrian judges and stewards; they were all so well turned out last year.

Speaking of well turned out, the Pavilion was a riot of colour and so many entries. Thanks to all who take part and keep the tradition alive and well. We have the usual classes plus, shoebox houses, seedlings in an egg carton for the kids, scarecrows for all the family and Dads get to write out and present their best Dad Joke.  I’m thinking photos with speech bubbles, maybe?

2020 will be the 105th Lake Hayes A&P Show and we are delighted that the Arrowtown Lifestyle Retirement Village will be supporting us once again.  So, pop along and see them and you can find out more about stage two of the development. Another 26 architecturally designed homes with the first two new villas to be completed early next year.   You’ll find them near the shade sail which proved so popular last year we are putting up another down by the pets. More hay bales to sit on and a chance to watch the east end of the showground in the shade. And we have a water bowser so you can fill up your water bottles from taps – no more plastic bottles.
